The Founder’s Hall is dedicated to Rōben, the first Chief Abbot of Tōdai-ji, who along with Emperor Shōmu and the monk Gyōki played an important role in the establishment of the temple. In the center of the inner sanctum is an octagonal feretory in which is enshrined the National Treasure portrait statue of the monk. Since the first memorial service for Rōben was held in 1019, 246 years after the monk’s death, in all likelihood the Founder’s Hall and the portrait statue date from that time. This masterpiece of portrait sculpture is filled with great vitality. (On view on December 16th)
