Ceremony Commemorating Emperor Shomu’s Vow to Create the Great Buddha (Oct. 15th)

On Oct. 15, 743AD, the Emperor Shomu issued an edict proclaiming his intention to construct a monumental image of the Great Buddha. A Memorial Buddhist Service is held annually at 10:00 on Oct. 15 in the Great Buddha Hall to commemorate this proclaiming.

Please note that from 7:30 to 15:00 due to the Memorial Service, the worshiping route will be changed at Great Buddha Hall so please follow the instruction. The Great Buddha cannot be worship from the front.

And also, at 13:30, Noh play will be performed at Kagami Pond. Noh is a Japanese traditional play and dance performed with Noh masks.
